Spring has sprung! But how about your summer garden?
Proper landscaping can be tricky, especially living near the coast. Rehoboth Beach is a summer destination, but it may not quite live up to the expectations of being a tropical getaway. This is a guide for your garden, providing tips and tricks to having landscaping you really dig.
The US Department of Agriculture has a standard hardiness zone map by which gardeners and growers can determine which plants are most likely to thrive in a location. This map is based on the average annual minimum winter temperature divided into 10-degree Fahrenheit zones. The Delaware beaches land into the 7b plant zone. This will help you when making a decision on plants in your yard.
You can plant anything that is in your zone, or lower, with little maintenance. But as you stray away from your zone’s sweet spot, maintaining plants will become increasingly more difficult. For instance, tropical plants are very difficult to maintain when planted in the ground in our plant zone. The temperature is just not consistently hot enough for them to thrive, though there is an alternative. Taking the time to plant them into pots that can be taken in at night and in cold weather will keep your tropical plants, such as banana leaves or a hibiscus, thriving.

Liriope
Liriope are tufted, tuberous-rooted, grass-like perennial which typically grows 12-18″ tall and features clumps of strap-like, arching, glossy, dark green leaves. It is perfect for a vacation home as it is small and very low maintenance.
Crape Myrtle
Crape Myrtle trees come in different colors such as pink, purple, red, even white. They thrive in almost any kind of soil, sand, or clay but they do like at least eight hours of sun each day. They bloom on new wood, so they should be pruned in winter or early spring.
Coneflower
These flowers thrive in the sun! Make sure to keep them away from extra shady areas on your property so these sweet-scented flowers can flourish.
Hydrangea
These plants thrive in rich, porous, somewhat moist soils. Having some sort irrigation system would be ideal for a plant as thirsty as this one.
Knock-out Roses
These roses sure pack a punch! They set themselves apart from traditional roses because of how little you need to do to maintain them. They come in a variety of colors such as pink, purple, even yellow.
